Kudos to Charlene Demers

Congratulations to Charlene for winning the Orlando VA Medical Center’s Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs Award for Excellence in Nursing for Advanced Practice Nurse!

Name Change

The FAET Board of Directors decided to put the decision of whether FAET should change its name to the membership for a vote at the 2011 conference in Fort Lauderdale.  The decision to change the organization's name passed
(36 to 16).
The board requests that members offer suggestions for a new name for the organization.  A vote on the name will take place at the 2012 conference on the West Coast.
Some suggestions from the Name Change Committee are Florida WOCN or Florida WOC Nurses.
What are your suggestions?  Email cdemersrn@cfl.rr.com with your suggestions.

FAET 2011 Conference

On May 6 & 7, 2011, The FAET held its Annual Wound Ostomy and Continence Conference at the Lago Mar Resort in Fort Lauderdale. The FAET conference has become a favorite of WOCNs throughout the state of Florida because of the high quality of speakers, diversity of topics, the opportunity to network with colleagues.  In addition the conference provides contact hours at a reasonable cost.

The 2011 conference theme was WOCN Practice: The Gold Standard.  In keeping with this theme, a chest brimming with jewels, gold coins, tiaras, goblets and beads was displayed, reminiscent of the legend of gold washed up onto South Florida's beaches in the 1700's, therefore inspiring Fort Lauderdale to be known as the “Gold Coast”.
On Friday attendees had the opportunity of visit exhibitors while enjoying Hor D'oeuvres and cocktails with live music in the background.
The first speaker, Dr. John E. Roberts III, MD FASCRS FACS, Colorectal Surgeon got the program off to a great start with his presentation entitled “Stoma Complications”.  Dr.  Roberts' statement “Stomas do not belong there and want to go home” brought an interesting perspective. One of the participant's comments was “I loved his respect for WOC and our role”. Another comment stated:  “Great sense of humor and thinking outside the box”.
Michael Gerald, a young inspiring ostomate in collaboration with Broward Ostomy Association Members performed an entertaining skit delivering the message that successful planning and management of ostomy surgery provides those who have undergone this particular type of surgery the opportunity to lead full, normal, and productive lives.

Our first lecture on Saturday was The Continence lecture by Dorothy Doughty which by general consensus was exceptional.  Dorothy is without a doubt, one of the best contemporary speakers in our field.

Dr. Nancy Collins presented “Minimizing the Risk of Practice: What Practitioners Should Know about Law Suits and the Common Care Issues That Give Raise to Litigation”.  Evaluator statements highlighted her effective presentation style and high level of energy and labeled it as an eye opening lecture.

According to the audience, the case study presentations were one of the favorite parts of the conference providing the opportunity to learn from our peers. Molly Brethour, Karen Durigan, Donna Lehman, Vivian Bartlett, Argelia Welber and Brandee Heath performed superbly.  They showed their creativity, patient advocacy and professionalism.  FAET members requested that Case Studies continue at future conferences.

Dr. Marie Williams, DPM in her lecture, showed her enthusiasm and passion for limb salvage and wound care.

The conference ended on a high note with Dr Juan Bravo, MD's lecture on HBO and indications for its use.  The audience viewed him as a charismatic speaker and excellent source of information.

In addition to presentations by world-class speakers, this year's conference included an award ceremony honoring an influential community leader and this award was presented to Wendy Lueder, president of Broward Ostomy Association for her tireless commitment to Broward County WOCN's and patients. A beautiful necklace named “The Heart of Gold” was also given to Wendy to signify her heart of gold. Wendy stated that she will wear the necklace proudly.

Overall the 2011 FAET conference The Gold Standard was considered a great success.  Some examples of the positive input written by the attendees is are as follows:
  • Excellent program, well planned and executed
  • Resort is beautiful- Can we come again?!!
  • Good flow of topics
  • Great location, great food, great vendors, great speakers and topics
  • I can't believe how much I received from this conference for such a low monetary cost.
As always there is room for improvement, some topics suggestions for the next conferences were:
Fistula management, necrotizing faciitis, pelvic exenteration, continue case studies, biologic dressings ,wound healing at the cellular level, microclimate, palliative wound care when the goal is not healing, lymphedema, Suspected Deep Tissue Injury ( SDTI), dermatology, compression and Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), mentoring new WOCNs, sample pathways for professional development, care and treatment of complex cases such as leaking Gastrostomy Tube (GT) and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) sites, foot and nail care, pressure redistribution, methods for pressure ulcer prevention and more advanced level.
In summary, as written by one conference evaluator, WOCN Practice: The Gold Standard was the “Gold Standard indeed”!”
Respectfully submitted by the 2011 FAET Conference Planning Committee,
Amparo Cano, MSN, CWOCN
Patricia Paxton-Alan, MSN, ARNP-BC, CWOCN
Patricia Corvino, MSN, CWOCN
Argelia Welber, BSN, CWOCN
Debbie Crum from the Morton Plant Hospital system recertified through PGP.  Congrats!!

Tampbay Networking group next meeting is July 21 at 6 pm at the Mythos Greek Tavern in Clearwater. Hollister will present a brief informative talk and then discuss the annual FAET meeting to be held in the Tampbay area for 2012--Yeah!!  Anybody who would like to be on a committee to this group please contact Sheryl Fulmer at  Sheryl.Fulmer@baycare.org
This is good for PGP points and better to know your local WOCN/ET friends--and lots of fun preparing and having input.

Spotlight On: Wendy Leuder

When diagnosed with ulcerative colitis her freshman year in college, Wendy Lueder was no stranger to ostomy surgery. As a child in the 1950's she watched her grandfather, a general surgeon, wear a black rubber pouch on his stomach that he manufactured from inner tubes in his basement. Wendy's grandfather had self-diagnosed his need for colon removal in the 1930's and traveled to Vienna, Austria for surgery. He then remained in Vienna for three years to recuperate and learn the surgery himself, before returning to the U.S.

During Wendy's freshman year in college, pain, bleeding, cramping, fever, and weakness to the point of barely being able to walk were part of her daily life. Each semester, weeks were lost to hospitalizations
and Wendy's weight dropped to 89 pounds. However, with class notes from friends, paid tutors and even her mom, Wendy graduated in five years with a degree in philosophy.

After resisting surgery for many years due to fear that it would be the end of her life as a desirable single woman, Wendy elected to have an ostomy surgery. Ironically, her only regret now is that she waited so
long. She recalls, "When I had my surgery, the presence of my surgical appliance was all I could think about every day. It was like loud music. Gradually, I got used to it and now its elevator music, a non-issue that I only become aware of when it's time to help another."

After her surgery, Wendy became the newsletter editor and eventually the President of her local chapter of the United Ostomy Associations of America. She also met the love of her life at age 34, her sweetheart
Rennold - the two have been married for 27 years. Wanting to do a more professional job for her chapter's newsletter and create a Web site, Wendy returned to college at the age of 58 to earn a second degree in graphic design. She graduated in 2005 with highest honors and won the Pinnacle award for the most service hours performed of anyone in her class.

Today, Wendy and her husband reside in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She credits her sister Pam as being her greatest encouragement. Pam, who has undergone the same surgery as Wendy, took off with her husband Andy and two children on a seven year voyage around the world in a forty foot sailboat, with no running water, except with a foot pump, and no hot water. Wendy learned that most all limitations we put on ourselves are from our attitudes, not from circumstances.

Wendy Lueder envisions improved quality of life for ostomates. Wendy is a person of many talents. Her latest accomplishment was earning a degree in Graphic Design Technology.  She selected graphic design as a compliment to the work she does with the Broward Ostomy Association. She has utilized her skills through preparation of power point, editing the Broward Beacon and with our award certificate.

Wendy is not lacking in culinary skills either. All speakers are treated to a tasty treat of brownies from Wendy’s personal bakery.

She acknowledges all of the WOCNs in attendance at the meeting.  Every year she selects a memorable token of appreciation for the WOCNs. One notable display of art and poetry was the gift of; “The Bridge Builder”, a reminder of un-selfish contribution to humanity.

She volunteers her service to the Broward ostomy association where she has served as President and editor of the Broward Beacon, the Broward ostomy association newsletter. Wendy’s participation is a team effort because she includes her lovely husband Ren, who serves as our computer technology person for the meetings.  Wendy’s support for the ostomates does not end on Sunday when the BOA meeting ends. She applies her artistic skills for the support of the members. This was affectionately displayed with her photograph of one the member’s mural on the wall on Sistrunk in Fort Lauderdale. BOA is considered one of the strongest and well organized local ostomy support groups by the United Ostomy Association of America.
In 2007 Wendy’s efforts were rewarded when she was selected, and won, the prestigious Great Comebacks South Region Award. This award is given to a person with an ostomy whose personal life and contribution to their communities serve as an inspiration to others.

Wendy is honored today because of her relentless work in improving the lives of new ostomy patients at Broward Health and in the community. Thanks to Wendy for a job well done.

We Exceeded our Goal! Cycling for Scholarships Update

From WOCNS:
Dr. Jeter's in St. Augustine... how much did we raise?

Dear Nellie,

Today, as Dr. Jeter rolled into St. Augustine, Fla. and completed her cross-country cycling tour, the WOCN Society counted the donations for a final time. As of this morning, we exceeded our fundraising goal of $200,000 with a grand total of $208,613!

Cycling for Scholarships has undoubtedly been the Society's most comprehensive fundraising effort to date and we owe our success to our member supporters. By meeting our goal, the WOCN Foundation can fund educational scholarships for another 5 years and award an additional 100 scholarships. What an amazing accomplishment thanks to YOU!

Through it all, Dr. Katherine Jeter has endured the hot deserts of Arizona, the dusty hills of Texas, and the thick Florida humidity. She's truly had an amazing journey. The WOCN Society applauds Katherine for her tremendous sacrifice and determination to raise awareness of WOC nursing. We are forever grateful to her generosity and example.

While the event is now over, contributions are still being accepted. If you would like to give a gift to the WOCN's Cycling for Scholarships campaign, please click the button below.

Find out how Dr. Jeter will re-adjust to civilian life after the tour, by continuing to follow her blog! Dr. Jeter will continue to make posts, as well as by others involved with the event."

I was delighted to attend Katherine Jeter’s finish for cycling for scholarships today and here's the photos.
